In his defense of "Faerie" (i.e.fantasy fiction), Tolkien argues that the measure of truth in literature is not so much whether its events are factual as whether the story adheres to and upholds what is true–the principles of right and wrong by which the universe are governed. Brubaker's fairy tale is, by this definition, among the truest of true stories. While it is filled with fantastic imagery, grand music, and masterful poetry, it never loses sight of the truths that drive the results of our every word and deed to their inevitable end. I really enjoyed this book. It is written in the tradition of George MacDonald and C.S.Lewis, and it doesn't disappoint. The parallels with biblical truths are obvious enough to be thought-provoking without getting in the way of the amazing story of goodness overcoming evil. The writing is clear, building scenes and images that delight and entertain. Five stars and both thumbs. By David Miller

Ahhh, the wonder of the cooing, softly-speaking doves, invisible to those who are evil, but shining with the beauty of the Father's inward Light to the pure in heart.
